IDT
Story

Integrated Device Technology, better known as IDT, was an American company based in San José (California). Founded in 1980 as semiconductor vendors, they designed and manufactured semiconductor components.

The WinChip series was a low-power, Socket 7-based x86 processor designed by Centaur Technology and marketed by its parent company IDT. The design of the WinChip was quite different from other processors of the time. Rather than having a large number of transistors, IDT, using its experience in the RISC processor market, created a small, electrically efficient processor similar to the 80486, due to its microarchitecture. It had a much simpler design than its competitors. Socket 7, such as AMD K5, K6, and Intel Pentium. This fact allowed to use cheaper older plates than their competitors in other brands, giving a similar performance to these at a lower price.

In September 2019, the Renesas group acquired the entire IDT company.
