Athlon / Duron

On this occasion and again following the lines set by Intel, the manufacturer AMD returned to develop a processor with a socket in a flat format.

This socket was called "Socket A" and like Intel's socket 370, it meant the abandonment of the previous vertical formats, Slot 1 in Intel and Slot A in AMD.

With this type of socket, processors with smaller electronics could be produced, which resulted in an increase in the speed of the same processor.

Athlon and Duron processors were launched on the market.

The Duron was a low cost processor but it used the same board as the Athlon, so many sales were based on the possibility of changing the processor if the Duron was "small". You could just buy an Athlon and replace one processor with another.
